MBBS is one of the most sought after profession in India and abroad which promises an individual ample scope and job opportunities after course completion.

So if you are an aspiring MBBS student, or a Doctor looking for PG courses after MBBS, it is best to plan your career path ahead. You can take up these options even if you are studying MBBS abroad or in India.

So the Top 5 Career Paths after MBBS are as follows:

1. POST GRADUATION


Most aspiring Doctors, who want to practice their craft, want to choose this option. Post Graduation course in Medicine are as follows:

PG – SPECIALITY

PG Speciality courses are broadly classified into MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery).

Selection Criteria: Merit Basis on performance in PG NEET exam.

Even after multiple attempts many aspirants are unable to get a seat as the seats are extremely limited as compared to the number of applicants.

Course Duration: 3 years.

PG – DIPLOMA

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has listed around 61 PG diploma courses after MBBS.

Selection Criteria: Merit Basis on performance in PG NEET exam.

Course Duration: 2 years

DNB

Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is the title awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), an autonomous academic body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India to candidates who successfully complete their postgraduate or postdoctoral medical education under it.

DNB is considered equivalent to MD/MS/DM/MCh.

Selection Criteria: Merit Basis on performance in PG NEET exam.

Course Duration: 3 years

2. POST GRADUATE STUDIES ABROAD


Many Indian Medical graduates plan to pursue their PG medical studies in USA or UK.

For PG in USA, aspirants have to qualify in USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination). It is a 3 step examination and one of the most challenging examinations in the world. Though success ratio of Indians at clearing USMLE and gaining residency in USA is very less, but those who manage to can expect a bright future.

PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) is the licensure examination for residency in UK. Though challenging, it is comparatively easier than USMLE. There are coaching classes which prepare aspirants for these examinations. With some guidance it can be worth giving it a try.

3. RESEARCH


There a few research universities in India like NIMHANS that admit doctors directly to their research programs based on merit. Some of them also have their individual entrance exams. Such institutes mostly offer Ph.D. along with fellowship.

4. MASTERS IN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT (MHA)


Advancement in technology and its incorporation in Hospitals has made it important for competent manpower to manage it effectively.

Masters in Hospitality Management (MHA) teaches multidisciplinary conceptual skills to protect the medical profession and clients from unnecessary litigation, human resource development, quality and risk management, environment conservation, marketing and product diversification and logistic emergency management.

The MHA programme aims to prepare a candidate to assume the responsibilities of a hospital administrator or executive in a government or corporate or any other hospital. The Indian healthcare sector is experiencing an exponential growth and is an excellent career option after MBBS.

Course Duration: 3 years

5. CLINICAL PRACTICE


If you are unable to crack PG entrance exam, it is better to continue practice and keep preparations on for the exams. That will also add experience to your resume when you apply for a PG seat. You can practice at:

Government hospitals: Full time basis or Contract basis.

Private Hospitals: Private hospitals are always looking for talented practitioners.

Private Clinics or Nursing Homes: These are good options to work at as you can give more time to your PG preparation.
