The Medical University of Lodz was founded on October 1, 2002, as a merger of the Medical Academy of Lodz and the Military Medical Academy of Lodz (founded July 1, 1958). It is the largest teaching hospital unit in Poland and a European research center. At the Medical University of Lodz, students are instructed by a 250-plus Basic Science and Clinical Medicine Faculty, composed of physicians, teachers, and researchers. Most faculty members of the university hold a dual MD/Ph.D. Degree and all are board certified in their respective specialties.

The Medical University is the biggest state medical university in Poland and implements the following basic tasks:

 educating students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine-allied disciplines;

 educating research staff and conducting research work;

 conducting postgraduate training of highly qualified health care system staff;

 participating in health care programs set by the social health care system.

The university made an important evolution of a unique system, based on the availability -during posted office hours- of all professors for individual consultations with students in their offices. This helps promote better interaction between students and faculty as opposed to the previous Soviet-style system.

About Lodz City

Lodz, also rendered in English as Lodz, is the third largest city in Poland and a former industrial center. Located in the central part of the country, it has a population of 664,071 (2021). It is the capital of Lodz Voivodeship and is located approximately 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Warsaw. The city's coat of arms is an example of canting, as it depicts a boat (Lodz in Polish), which alludes to the city's name. The industrial development and demographic surge made Lodz one of the largest cities in Poland. Under the German occupation during World War II Lodz was briefly renamed Litzmannstadt after Karl Litzmann. The city's population was persecuted and its large Jewish minority was forced into a walled zone known as the Lodz Ghetto, from where they were sent to German concentration and extermination camps. The city became Poland's temporary seat of power in 1945.

Lodz experienced a sharp demographic and economic decline after 1989. It was only in the 2010s that the city began to experience the revitalization of its neglected downtown area. Lodz is ranked by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network on the “Sufficiency” level of global influence and is internationally known for its National Film School, a cradle for the most renowned Polish actors and directors, including Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski. In 2017, the city was inducted into the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and named UNESCO City of Film.

Climate of Lodz City

The climate of Lodz is moderately continental, characterized by cold winters, with temperatures often below freezing (0 °C or 32 °F), and pleasantly warm summers. Lodz is Poland's third largest city and is located in the center of the country, in the Lodz Voivodeship, and southwest of Warsaw. Winter is cold and gray. Snowfalls are frequent, but generally not abundant. Sometimes, cold waves from Siberia can occur, and the temperatures can drop to -20 °C (-4 °F) or below. The coldest record is -31 °C (-23.8 °F) and was set in January 1963. In summer, the temperatures are pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities, although sometimes there can be rain and thunderstorms. Every now and then, there can be short heat waves, with maximum temperatures exceeding 30 °C (86 °F).
